A 5 Star Review From Readers' Favorite for "The Independent" |
Reviewed By Janelle Fila for Readers’ Favorite - 1/25/16
The Independent by Rick McGee is a political fiction novel about a retired coach who is tired of the corruption of politics. When Coach Bob hears another story about the lies and deceit of those in political power, he decides to do something about it. He always held himself and his players to a high level of integrity on the field and he wants to take that same approach to the Senate race. But throwing his hat into the political ring is very different than coaching the team. Coach Bob hopes to use the lessons he learned coaching and teaching to navigate through the shark infested waters of politics. Will he come out unscathed? Can he weather the lies and the smear campaigns and the personal attacks? Can Coach Bob climb up to Capitol Hill and help bring back the morality and integrity that belong in our nation's capital? Or will he crack like so many before him? The Independent is a nice political story that really is very timely in its content, meaning that a lot of people will relate to Coach Bob. Politics needs to change and readers will root for Coach Bob, who exemplifies everything good in life. Rick McGee did a good job of creating a tough, industrious character who believes in working hard and receiving the rewards for that hard work. And I believe readers will relate to that kind of character, especially in today's political climate. |

It always feels like coming home when I get a chance to talk at LTCL. Thank you Morgan and all the ladies at the library for your support - Carol, Sue, Yvette, Linden, Sarah, Danielle and of course Kim. I enjoyed the evening and hope the political cartoons and trivia entertained the audience!
Cheers!

It was a pleasure to walk into Book People in Austin, Texas and see both books hugging a corner pocket in the 'Texas Author' section. Yardstick: A Life Measured (March, 2014) continues to pick up new readers, perhaps spurred along by The Independent (January, 2015) recently published. Feedback from readers remains strong, both guys and gals enjoy the positive message from Coach Bob about 'earning it' in life.

The Independent - now available!
A Coach Bob story with a positive message and lesson for readers. Coach Bob charges Capitol Hill and takes on a political system gone bad. What has Bob learned from the gridiron that prepares him for the aisles of congress? Can Bob show the political elite how to "earn it" and regain trust from the people? Can Bob and his family withstand the onslaught of a dirty campaign? Does Bob have the kind of game to survive in "the circle" of our nation's capital?
Get it today and learn the Coach Bob way!
My thanks to Dr. Charles Krauthammer for approving a key quote in the book!

The Independent - Coming Soon!
The book cover is framed and on the wall so we must be getting close to the publish date. All files and images have been uploaded to Lightning Source - our Print On Demand partner. The editing took a bit of time since we wanted to ensure quality and give the author as much help as possible :-). I expect we will be up on Amazon with the ebook and paperback and other online stores for the paperback in a few weeks.
Great way to begin the new year - with a Coach Bob story!

Hi folks, we are making great progress on Book #2, titled The Independent. The book cover was recently completed by Doug Brown and he nailed it, again! The image on the cover reveals the central theme of the story. Coach Bob climbs another hill to teach people how to "earn it". Can Coach Bob take advantage of his knowledge and skill from the gridiron and apply it to Congress? Has football prepared Bob for the slippery slope of our political system?
I'll keep you up to date on the book and the publish date. In the meantime, I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas!

Book #2 was sent to the editor. Yikes, I hope she's ready for some surgery! My target date for publication is January 2015, after the holidays and elections. In book two, Coach Bob is retired from football and decides to run for political office. Does Coach Bob have the kind of game to take on the political system in Washington DC? Politics is not the story, only the background for Coach Bob to teach others about earning their way in life. I'll keep you posted on our progress!

Hi folks. I received a letter from a high school football coach yesterday that touched my heart. Terry Grider coached the Freshman when I was a Senior (that's me #53 and Bob Uecker is the QB #8). Here's some of what Terry wrote about Yardstick: A Life Measured:
"The whole story made me proud of the choice that I made many years ago to become a coach. Thanks for writing a feel-good story about coaching and working with young people. I plan on giving both of my kids your book to read. They are both majors in the U.S. Army and former athletes and West Point graduates. I think they will be able to relate to a lot of what you talk about, and I hope they will take your lesson to heart. I hope to have a chance someday to even pass along your book to my six grandkids. I think the positive things that you have to say can make a difference in their lives as they grow up in a very tough time. Thanks again for writing a great story that can teach all of us a lesson."

Kim and I recently returned from Alaska, a bucket list trip that far surpassed our expectations and imagination. I brought a copy of Yardstick and planned to leave it on the cruise ship. I thought it would be 'cool' for the book to travel the seas and see the world. And maybe someone would find it and enjoy the story. Instead I gave the book to Mike, a solo acoustic guitarist who played and sang beautiful music. We got to know Mike and learned he has written original songs so we encouraged him to play a few. They were terrific! Everyone in the audience enjoyed them as much as we did. Mike has not published his songs ... yet. So I gave him the book with an inscription that wished him well and challenged him to get those songs to market. After all, if I can get a book out then Mike can get those songs out for all to enjoy. Good luck Mike!
The book signings in Elmhurst, Illinois were a terrific success! Many old and dear friends attended along with three football coaches from high school, including Corby Howard our head coach. We raised $150 from a portion of book sales for the York High School Boosters and York High School Distinguished Alumni Program. A check and autographed book were sent to Diana Smith, Principal.
A special thanks to Vince for the pool party, Jay for organizing the events, Amy for traveling the greatest distance and most of all Bob for pulling it all together. Until next time my good friends.

I am escaping my writing room for a few days! Will be in Elmhurst, Illinois for book signing events (and mini reunions) on June 20th at Riley's and June 21st at Doc Ryan's. Look forward to seeing family and old friends! I wonder if those bars in the picture at left, are a good theme for the weekend?
My sister sent me a sign with a great saying we saw at my Uncle Joe's house that seems very appropriate:
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail but a true friend will be sitting right next to you saying "Damn ... that was fun!"
See the files below for more information ... hope to see you there!
